I Love My Soda; Do I Really Need to Give It Up? The facts about soda.

You like your soda, both diet and regular. It tastes good, and you’ve enjoyed it ever since you were a little kid. But, we didn’t know then Soda sugarwhat we know now- soda is bad for you! Dr. James Pechloff, of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin can tell you; soda wreaks havoc on your teeth!

To begin with, when you drink regular soda, the sugar in the soda combines with the normal bacteria in your mouth and produces an acid, which can eat away the protective enamel of your teeth. Next thing you know, you have dental decay. Diet soda is just as bad because it has its own acid. Many professionals believe that diet drinks are worse for you because they contain artificial sweeteners which your body can’t get rid of.

Soda doesn’t just attack your teeth. Drinking soda can cause problems throughout your body. Some of the bad effects of soda include:

  • Higher blood sugar levels
  • An increased risk of diabetes
  • An increased risk of heart attack
  • A decrease in your bone density

Along with these problems, you can add obesity to the list. A study by Harvard researchers demonstrated that for each soda consumed, you are increasing your risk of obesity by 1.6 times!

But let’s get back to your teeth. You need to kick the soda habit, but how do you do it? Drinking soda can be an addictive habit, and like any addiction, it’s best to gradually wean yourself off of it. You can try gradually lowering the amount you drink or mixing your soda with water.

While you are weaning yourself off of soda, protect your teeth from decay-producing acid by:

  • Swishing your mouth with water or brushing your teeth after drinking soda
  • Drinking with a straw to keep the sugar off of the surface of your teeth

There are some things you should NOT do when you are drinking soda. Remember not to:

  • Drink soda before going to sleep- this allows the sugar to sit on the surface of your teeth and do its damage to your enamel
  • Gradually sip the soda for a long period- when you do this, it’s like giving your teeth an acid bath
