Tooth-colored fillings don't just offer a more attractive alternative to silver amalgam fillings, but also provide several other important fillingsadvantages. Our Wauwatosa, WI, dentist, Dr. James Pechloff, discusses the benefits of the fillings.

A more natural appearance

Tooth-colored fillings are designed to blend in with your tooth color. Composite resin, a flexible material made from soft plastic and powdered glass, is tinted to match common tooth shades for a more natural appearance. Although composite resin is initially soft, it becomes hard and durable after it's exposed to a curing light in our Wauwatosa office.

Reduced cracking risk

Because silver amalgam fillings contain metals, they shrink and expand when you sip an icy soda or eat a hot slice of pizza. Years of expansion and shrinking can take a toll on your tooth and cause it crack. Once a tooth cracks, the chance of a fracture or tooth decay increases.

Improved strength

A small amount of healthy tooth structure is removed along with the decayed portion of your tooth during the filling process. The larger the area removed, the weaker your tooth becomes. Tooth-colored fillings don't require as much of the healthy part of your tooth to be removed in preparation for the filling. Because a greater percentage of healthy tooth structure remains intact, your risk of crack or fracture is reduced. Composite resin fillings also bond to teeth and help strengthen them.

Tooth-colored fillings improve the appearance of your smile and offer important protections for your teeth. Call our Wauwatosa, WI, dentist, Dr. Pechloff, at (414) 475-5505 to schedule an appointment to determine if tooth-colored fillings are a good option   for you.
